Borna Barisic has a contract with Rangers lasting until June 2022.

He’s played around 80% of the club’s minutes in the Scottish Premiership so far this season and is clearly an important member of Steven Gerrard’s squad.

There’s been claims of interest from elsewhere, most notably AS Roma and others in Serie A, yet nothing has felt especially serious or imminent.

Gerrard speaking in the past few days and confirming he knows all about the Roma interest, and suggesting every player has their price, has led Gazzetta dello Sport to assumptions about the Rangers defender which seem extremely optimistic to say the least.

The Italian newspaper say he’d cost ‘around €5m’, and after spitting your coffee out at that, don’t take another sip before reading the next part.

Roma ‘would like to loan him with a right of redemption’. That means a no risk loan for them, so they can send Barisic back if he doesn’t work out. Presumably Gazzetta believe the purchase right would be around €5m.

It’s stated ‘Gerrard is ready to capitulate’.

Gazzetta and Roma may be in for a shock here.
