Roma remain interested in Aston Villa midfielder Douglas Luiz, with Steven Gerrard’s recent comments on his contract seen as a ‘green light’ to make a move.
That’s according to AS Roma Live, who say the Brazilian is one of several options being looked at as Roma hope to give Jose Mourinho the defensive midfielder he’s long wanted.
They state that Roma are keen to rectify the lack of a defensive midfielder in this current squad, having failed to do so last summer when Mourinho targeted the likes of Arsenal’s Granit Xhaka.
‘Numerous’ names have been monitored and approached over the last 12 months, and Luiz is one of them.
He’s currently an ‘immovable pillar’ for Steven Gerrard, despite the fact that his contract is due to expire next summer, and they have not managed to get him signed to a new deal.
It means his situation is ‘not the happiest’, at least for Aston Villa, who are aware that his performances have attracted interest from the Premier League and abroad.
Gerrard has recently commented on the matter, insisting he is a player the club would love to keep, but the matter will have to be looked at individually.
That’s something Roma have taken notice of, and those comments have been taken as a ‘green light’ for them to make a move and present Villa with an offer that will tempt them into a sale.
What that figure might be isn’t known, but we’re sure Aston Villa would like to recoup more than the £15.12m they paid to sign Luiz from Manchester City in 2019.
Whether Roma will offer enough remains to be seen, but they’ve seemingly been encouraged to make a move by Gerrard’s comments.
