Finally, after the weekend of speculation, Ralf Rangnick was announced as the interim Manchester United manager.

The German will be in charge of the Old Trafford side until the end of the season with a consultant role to follow for the next two years, but one question remained: would he be in charge against Arsenal on Thursday?

Following the 1-1 draw against Chelsea at the weekend, there was hope that Rangnick would be granted his work permit in time to prepare the fixture against the Gunners, but Sport1 in Germany, via their journalist Patrick Berger, don’t think that will happen.

Taking to social media, he said ‘it seems unlikely’ to see the German on the bench against Arsenal as his ‘work visa needs to be finalised’.

Therefore, ‘Michael Carrick could sit on the Manchester United bench again on Thursday’.

That was always going to be the case if Rangnick wasn’t able to make it, but Berger also added that the Old Trafford side ‘have agreed for Rangnick to bring a small number of his own staff’, but Carrick ‘will stay on’, thus keeping his coaching role at the club.
