Atalanta star Robin Gosens has hit out at the proposed Super League plans, citing Arsenal and Tottenham as examples of the unfairness of the proposal.

The controversial new European competition was announced on Sunday evening, with several of Europe’s top clubs confirming their plans to leave and join the new format.

The plans have been met with widespread criticism and outrage, with the so-called top six in England facing a huge backlash from both the public and the media.

While the set up of the system and the money involved has formed the basis of the outrage so far, the clubs involved has also called uproar.

That has largely been focused on the likes of Arsenal and Tottenham, with many pointing out that they are simply being included based on their fan bases worldwide and their current valuations as opposed to their sporting success.

That is a standpoint that Gosens has taken, insisting he will be protesting against the plans because of their inclusion.

“This is a huge catastrophe for football. I’m shocked that it’s coming true now,” he told the Kicker meets DAZN podcast.

“The fact that a small underdog prevails has always been the basis of football.

“If there is now a Super League in which Arsenal or Tottenham qualify forever without any sporting achievement, then the foundation of football will be taken away.

“Everyone must be aware that football will then change forever and will never be the same as it is at present.

“People are still dying all over the world; there is a lack of money upfront and behind.

“These twelve clubs are founding their own league and getting 100 or 150 million shoved up their behinds.

“You have to question the ethics of that. The sad thing is: at the end of the day; it’s all about money, money, money.

“The cut would be so big that hopefully, many fans will oppose it. I would join such protests.”
