This week’s edition of SportBild is dominated by Bundesliga transfers, ones that have happened and ones which are yet to get over the line. German football appears to be in a never ending battle with the English game, always eager to show they’re not lagging behind when it comes to competence on deals.
Jobe Bellingham had been the subject of a battle between multiple Bundesliga sides, with several approaches made to Sunderland to sign the 19-year-old before he ultimately left them for Borussia Dortmund.
Sunderland sealing promotion to the Premier League appeared to make things harder for clubs wanting to sign him. Whilst there were no claims Sunderland were going to totally block a transfer, it quickly became clear they weren’t going to sell for the €20-25m which some in the German media had suggested.
SportBild now report they have the figures for transfer fee paid and salary.
The midfielder’s base salary is said to be €3m, but that can increase to €5m with bonus payments. To hit these points it’s crucial he’s playing games and not stuck to the bench. It’s also on a staggered basis, with the opportunity to increase the total figure should he progress each year until the contract’s end date of 2030.
SportBild state: ‘If Bellingham becomes a regular starter over the next three years and BVB performs well in the league and the Champions League, the England U21 international can join the ranks of the high earners. His salary – including bonuses – could then land in the range of six to eight million euros.’
When it comes to Sunderland, SportBild report the transfer fee was €30.5m plus a potential further €5m in bonus payments. The payments will be spread over three years.
Unlike his big brother, Jobe Bellingham wants to live alone in Dortmund.
