Georginio Wijnaldum left Liverpool at the end of last season, when his contract with the Premier League club expired.

Jurgen Klopp had wanted to keep the midfielder in his squad at Anfield, but the club were unable to reach an agreement on a new deal. The Dutchman was then expected to move to Barcelona, before changing his mind and signing for PSG instead.

Things haven’t gone perfectly for Wijnaldum since the move, and he’s spoken repeatedly about his frustration at not being a regular starter for Mauricio Pochettino’s side.

In the Champions League, he’s only played a total of 86 minutes for PSG this season, split over three matches. The French side are set to face RB Leipzig this week, and ahead of the match, the player has spoken to the media… with several of the questions being about Liverpool.

Asked about the differences between his role with the Reds and that at PSG, Paris United quote him as saying: “In Liverpool we knew each other well, we formed the same team for five years. We had our identity, it was different. The style of play too. Here, I think the coach prefers when we rotate, when we do not keep the same position. In Liverpool we were together for five years and here it’s a new team, I have to get used to my teammates, this is our first season together.”

Wijnaldum was then asked if he sees any similarities between his new side the Liverpool team which won the Champions League in 2019: “As I said, the Liverpool team have played for years together. We made a lot of progress and evolved before winning the Champions League. Here at PSG, it looks like my first season in Liverpool; we discover each other. The most important thing is to get used to the players. It’s hard to compare these two teams.”

The 30-year-old will hope that being chosen to speak to the press ahead of Wednesday’s match is a big sign that Pochettino plans a leading role for him in the tie against RB Leipzig.
