Manchester City striker Gabriel Jesus has given an interview to ESPN Brasil following his club’s 6-1 win over Huddersfield Town this Sunday.
As the Brazilian star was out of the national team list that was announced on Friday, most of the chat with reporter João Castelo Branco was about his frustration to be left out by Tite.
Jesus claimed to be fine with the decision, as there are other players for the position who deserve a chance, such as Roberto Firmino from Liverpool. He also said he knows why he hasn’t been called up, and that’s because of his poor performances in the World Cup.
“I’m very honest, man. When it comes to me I will always answer what I think, because I am talking about me. I can’t speak to other people. But from me, my individual, I don’t think I did a Cup like I expected. I think everyone expected it. Regarding goals. Which is what I was there to do. Goals”, Gabriel Jesus told ESPN Brasil.
“Unfortunately I couldn’t do it. It happens. If it’s the number nine of the Brazilian national team in a World Cup, there’s a lot that… there’s nothing to talk about. Have to do it.”
Regarding Manchester City’s match against the Terriers, the player was asked if there was a relief for scoring his first goal after a few months.
“Well, I’m always going to try to score. Today, there before the goal, I had two finishes, a header, unfortunately I couldn’t score, then I succeeded. I celebrated normally, of course there is no relief, because there is no such thing as a relief for me. I’m always very happy when I score. And today I think I managed to play. Play with the ball, without the ball. And I helped the team, just as they helped me.”
And about the team’s performance, Jesus has claimed that City will come with the same hunger to fight for the title once again this season: “I was very happy for the game, the team game. A very consistent game, where we got to do what we’ve been training, that Guardiola asked for. And there it is.”
“We managed to make a beautiful game, a beautiful result, it shows that our ambition to want to conquer and continue making history with this shirt remains the same.”
