There are lots of reasons for young footballers to join Manchester City, even when faced with offers from other attractive clubs.
Money will always play at least some part, coaching and development is often praised at the club, the chance to perhaps work with Pep Guardiola is a big pull, as is the lure of the Premier League and opportunity to be alongside great players.
But then there’s also learning English, as explained by Angelino.
The now 21 year old joined Manchester City in 2013 from Deportivo la Coruna and went out on four different loans, to three different countries, before leaving permanently for PSV in the last summer transfer window.
With Barcelona playing the Dutch club in the Champions League tonight, Spanish newspaper Marca have had a chat with Angelino… and it ended up being mainly about his former club.
Marca put it to the youngster that Real Madrid and Barcelona wanted him before he moved to English football, and he replied: “I received several offers, I chose to go to England and I have no regrets. I have spent several wonderful years there. Also, I thought that the language would help me look for a job if I could not be a footballer.”
Luckily for Angelino, he doesn’t have to worry about that.
On working with Guardiola and his loan experience, the footballer said: “I did not play much, but the six months I was with Pep were a pleasure. You can learn from a genius like him every day.
“I went from being with Pep to playing in Segunda… I did not really know where I was going with the thing. My idea was not to go out so many times, but I am happy because those decisions have helped me to now be in a top team.”
