Frenkie de Jong is arguably the greatest talent at Ajax right now. His displays for the Dutch club haven’t gone unnoticed, attracting interest from Barcelona.
De Jong’s current deal at Ajax runs down in 2022. Catalan newspaper Mundo Deportivo claims a ‘heavyweight’ of the La Liga winners has already held talks with Ajax sporting director Marc Overmars.
Barcelona’s initial idea was to agree a fee with Ajax for De Jong and bring him to the Camp Nou in 2019. The report claims the Spanish champions will not rule out a quick move for the Dutchman this summer, if his employer is ready to sanction his sale and the price tag is acceptable for Ernesto Valverde’s sign.
However, right now Ajax are unwilling to let go one of their star players of this year. Their last title was in 2013/14 season and this has seen Overmars receive criticism for his transfer policy.
De Jong is aware of the interest from Barcelona and is said to be ‘delighted’ with the idea of playing at the Camp Nou. The negotiations with the player are already ongoing and he has already seen the Spanish outfit’s facilities first hand.
Barcelona won’t walks away if things don’t go their way with De Jong this summer. In that situation, they would want to block his transfer elsewhere by agreeing a deal with Ajax, which will see him continue in Amsterdam for one more season.
