For months, the Spanish media reported Barcelona want to improve their attack by signing Liverpool’s Luis Díaz until Athletic’s Nico Williams overtook him in their priority list.
On June 18th, Mundo Deportivo reported the La Liga winners are losing patience with the lack of effort from Díaz and his agent when it comes to pushing for a transfer.
Two days later, Marca accused the 28-year-old of using Barcelona to secure an improved contract at Liverpool. He has two years left on his contract at Anfield and is on a very low wage relative to other stars.
The Colombia international is on the front page of today’s Mundo Deportivo, along with the Athletic star. The Catalan newspaper states Barcelona interest in Díaz is ‘still alive’ as he’s a ‘valid alternative’ to Williams.
Last week, Barca reached a verbal agreement with Williams but they haven’t made advances since then. The 22-year-old’s agent has asked Barcelona for assurance in writing that they’ll be able to register him for the new season and if not, offer compensation to his client.
Therefore, the Williams operation is now at standstill while Hansi Flick’s side haven’t ruled out a move for the Liverpool player.
The former FC Porto man was the first choice for Barcelona sporting director Deco and can also operate as a No.9. He’s six years older than Williams, and Liverpool aren’t playing ball.
According to Mundo, Arne Slot’s side have not wanted to open the door for negotiations. In addition to this, Díaz’s agent has so far not done enough to put pressure on Liverpool to take his client away from Anfield.
Despite this, Barcelona keep the option to buy Díaz alive as they are aware of his firm desire to move to the Camp Nou.
