Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold is set to join Real Madrid in the summer window.

His contract expires in June and he has an agreement in place with Real Madrid to join them for free.

The Liverpool star is on the front page of today’s AS, with ‘signing with unknowns’ written in bold. Within the report, it’s explained his signing is on track to be announced at the end of this season.

Real Madrid have qualified for the FIFA Club World Cup that’ll start in the US on June 14th. They are unclear whether the 26-year-old can be part of their squad considering his contract at Liverpool expires on June 30th.

FIFA have allowed clubs that’ll take part in this competition to sign players between June 1-10th. Liverpool haven’t qualified for the Club World Cup and their season will come to an end in May.

If Real Madrid want the defender early, they have to negotiate with the Reds to secure an early release. Otherwise, they must register him between June 27th to July 3rd, provided they don’t get knocked out.

Dani Carvajal is expected to recover from his serious injury for the Club World Cup. It remains to be seen whether the 33-year-old will start in America or if Carlo Ancelotti will rely upon others.

AS points out Alexander-Arnold’s ‘defensive shortcomings’ could favour Carvajal to start in the Club World Cup and then gradually let the current Liverpool player take over should he warrant it.

To sum it up, Real Madrid want to negotiate with Liverpool to have Alexander-Arnold from the start of the Club World Cup. Even if they reach an agreement, it’s not given that he’ll immediately be a starter.
