Apart from their surprise Leicester City moment when they beat Paris Saint-Germain to the Ligue 1 title in 2012, Montpellier’s recent seasons have seen get lost somewhere around mid table.

Even back in 1991, the team would regularly finish outside of the top four, somewhere between 6th and 10th.

However, they did manage to win the Coupe de France in 1990, which allowed them to take part in the Cup Winner’s Cup, where they ended up playing Manchester United who went on to win the competition.

Among the players on Montpellier’s side was Régis Brouard, who played 15 minutes in the 1-1 first leg against United, and started the return leg.

Asked by RTBF what his best memory of that game against the Premier League side was, the former midfielder described how badly one of their defenders wanted to finish the game, regardless of personal safety.

He said: “During the first leg, our defender Michel Der Zakarian hurt his knee after a contact with Mark Hughes. At half-time, the doctor told him he’s ruptured his ligaments and asked him to stop playing…

“Der Zakarian wanted to finish the game, and played the entire second-half, marking Mark Hughes on a muddy surface with a bandage on his knee that was pretty much a cast. The next day, he was operated. It shocked me.”

Modern football, eh?
