When it rains, it pours.

That, other than being a description of most days in Manchester, is an apt depiction of what is going on at Everton.

Following the departure of Ronald Koeman, David Unsworth was placed in charge, at least on an interim basis, to steady the ship, but to no avail.

Losses to Chelsea, Leicester and now Lyon in the Europa League have done nothing to suggest the U23 manager is the man for the job, and it seems the players are stuck in some kind of vicious spiral of despair.

And while losing to the Ligue 1 side and getting knocked out of Europe was bad enough, ending the game with 10 men was the rotten cherry on top of the mouldy cake, as Morgan Schneiderlin was sent off for two yellow cards.

The former Manchester United midfielder, who was given a 4/10 by L’Equipe, was described in the French newspaper as ‘frankly unlucky and frankly frustrated’ after his performance on Thursday night.

To be fair, ‘unlucky’ and ‘frustrated’ could be applied to the entire Everton side, not just Schneiderlin, with everything that could possibly be going wrong actually going wrong.

Whoever takes over from David Unsworth at Goodison Park is going to have a monumental task on their hand trying to turn things around.
