Desperate times call for desperate measures.
Of course, most Chelsea fans won’t see it that way, but the vast majority of Premier League fans are still a bit amazed at David Luiz’s return to Stamford Bridge under Antonio Conte.
The Italian manager, known for his strict approach and rather rigid tactical plans, now faces the task of stifling David Luiz’s eccentric style of play, after months of searching for a new centre-back ended up in the Brazilian coming back on deadline day.
For the French media, and certain Paris Saint-Germain fans, the news came as a blessing, with the new Chelsea defender’s exit allowing Marquinhos a bigger role in the centre of defence alongside Thiago Silva.
And they weren’t the only ones: former PSG president Charles Villeneuve told Yahoo: “I think David Luiz’s departure is great news. He wasn’t adapted to PSG’s style of play, and he wasn’t a starter at Chelsea, he was more of a midfielder, largely inferior to Marquinhos.”
There is no doubt that David Luiz is a talented footballer, as in he’s good at kicking a football, but a defender? There are many arguments against that.
It’ll be a joy to have him back in the Premier League, mostly because there’s never a dull moment with him around, but it’ll also be very interesting to see how he fits in under Conte.
This could be a stroke of genius, or an absolute disaster, which, come to think of it, pretty much sums up David Luiz as a footballer.
