On Wednesday, we mused on social media that it was about the right time in the transfer window for some Leander Dendoncker drama.
The Belgian midfielder/defender has had a quiet transfer window by his standards, normally constantly linked with a move away from Anderlecht, but we’ve had a lot less of that this summer.
However, that has changed thanks to Foot Mercato, who report the player turned down both Crystal Palace and Wolverhampton, as well as a move to Marseille, who would be playing in the Europa League.
According to a source close to Dendoncker, speaking to the French website, the reason for this choice is because ‘he listens too much to people who don’t know the industry’.
Back in May, we covered multiple stories about the Eagles’ interest in the 23-year-old, and it seems Roy Hodgson’s side came close to getting their man, only for him to decide he didn’t want to go there.
As for Wolves, this is the first we’ve heard about it, with nothing in Belgium suggesting Nuno Espirito Santo’s side were interested in the Anderlecht starlet.
While we aren’t told why he refused both Crystal Palace and Wolverhampton (our guess is he saw them as beneath him), we do know why he didn’t go to Marseille: “Someone told him it was too complicated” i.e. there would be a lot of pressure from a demanding fanbase.
If he shies away from pressure that much, then perhaps a move to the Premier League isn’t for him, regardless of the club.
