Everton could probably do with Idrissa Gueye at the moment.
The midfielder was always going to be a loss for Marco Silva’s side and that’s why they were so reluctant to let him go during the January transfer window.
When the summer came, with Gueye and PSG maintaining their wish to work together, the Toffees didn’t hold their player back any longer and allowed him to join the French champions.
It’s clearly left a hole in Silva’s options at Everton, but it may well have filled a bigger than expected gap at PSG.
Thomas Tuchel was the man driving the interest from Paris, yet it must be said the club’s local media weren’t exactly bursting with excitement at the thought of the signing.
Perceptions have been changing and on Wednesday evening, Gueye went a long way to proving he was worth all the transfer effort.
L’Equipe quote Tuchel as saying, after the 3-0 victory over Real Madrid: “We fought a lot to sign this player. He’s a machine. He never stops running, he wins a lot of balls and, against a team like Real, he’s super important. It was a good mix between the three, with Marquinhos and Marco (Verratti), with a lot of intensity and possession.”
The French newspaper concede there ‘were some doubts’ about the transfer, and add: ‘He proved that on this level he also knows how to be formidable’
