Former Southampton forward Billy Sharp believes the club didn’t give him enough chances in the the Premier League. Sharp played just two Premier League games for Southampton before joining Leeds United in 2014.

Speaking to FourFourtwo, the Sheffield United star was asked if he should have been given more chances to play in the top fight during his career. The 31-year-old said he’s scored goals in other leagues, but like current Southampton forward Charlie Austin he thinks he could have succeeded in the top flight.

Sharp believes he has the same attributes as Austin, and had the ability to score goals in the Premier League if given the opportunity.

“I made two substitute appearances for Southampton, which isn’t enough time. I’ve scored goals in other leagues, and even though the Premier League is harder I look to players like Charlie Austin. He hasn’t got blistering pace, but gets himself in the right places to score goals. I see myself as someone like him, but I don’t dwell on it,” said the Sheffield United forward.

Now in the twilight of his career Sharp is in his third spell with Sheffield United, and he still has an eye for the goal. The forward has scored 21 goals in 36 games for the Blades this season, and has been selected as Division One’s Player of the Season by FourFourTwo.
