Forward has ‘said no’ to Tottenham ‘for now’ following phone call – Door ‘not completely closed’

A week or so ago, the idea that Tottenham could make a move for Memphis Depay was touted, with Spurs reportedly interested in the Dutchman.

Pushed to one side by Barcelona, it was believed a transfer could take place, with the two clubs in talks over the loan of Clément Lenglet.

That deal went through, as the France international moved to Antonio Conte’s squad for the season, but Depay will not be following him.

This comes courtesy of Sport, who explain the forward has ‘said no’ to Tottenham.

While his ‘priority objective was to continue at the Camp Nou’, Depay ‘understands that he could run out of minutes, so he is willing to listen to offers’.

However, he won’t just go anywhere, and ‘he wants to choose’ his next destination, which is why ‘today, Memphis has said no to Tottenham’s interest as he prefers to explore’ other avenues.

It’s explained Depay ‘received the call from Tottenham a few days ago’, who asked ‘about his situation’, with Barcelona demanding ‘more than €20m’ for a transfer.

Spurs never made an offer, but ‘did speak with the player’s entourage with the permission’ of the La Liga side, but the Netherlands international has since ‘decided to rule out Tottenham for now, although the door is not completely closed’.

The reason for this is that Depay ‘wants to be important in a team that has serious aspirations to win titles’.

Despite claims floating around that Manchester United could be interested in bringing him back to Old Trafford under Erik ten Hag, Barcelona ‘still don’t know anything’ about this, suggesting there’s nothing to it.
