While not as bad as Simone Zaza for West Ham, Jonathan Calleri’s time at London Stadium wasn’t exactly filled with joy and great performances.

Brought in on loan from agent driven Deportivo Maldonado, the Argentinean forward only managed the one goal for the Hammers in 19 appearances, meaning Slaven Bilic left it there and didn’t pursue anything further.

Having now signed for Las Palmas in Spain on a year-long loan, a club he came very close to joining back in January, the 23-year-old explains why he only joined them now rather than six months ago.

Speaking to Canarias7, he said: “I preferred to stay at West Ham. I’d only been there four months, I hadn’t adapted, I didn’t speak English and I wanted to have a few more good games.

“I wanted more consistency as I was playing some good games, then some other where I wasn’t playing as well. I finished the season happy because I got to play in the Premier League.”

Still, the season he spent in England wasn’t exactly what he expected, having missed some of the preseason, arriving injured, without knowing the language.

By the time he felt at home in London, the season was ending.

That’s why he’s made a promise to himself that he hopes to keep, and that is to always have a preseason with a new club.
