Even if you’ve only been briefly checking transfer rumours about Watford, you’ll know Lazio have an interest in Luis Suárez.
The young striker, currently on loan at Real Zaragoza in La Liga2, has caught the eye of Igli Tare, the Serie A side’s director of football, who sees the Colombian as the ideal backup and potential successor for Ciro Immobile and Felipe Caicedo.
There have been a number of reports in the Italian press suggesting Lazio had already reached an agreement with the player regarding a five-year contract worth around €1.5m/year, and the last hurdle was convincing Watford to sell.
That was always going to be the trickiest part, as the Hornets know the player’s talent could be useful to keep around Vicarage Road, so they’d need a decent amount of money to allow him to go.
The amount, depending on reports, could reach €50m, although Lazio have no intention of going that high.
Corriere dello Sport explain the Italians’ plan is to offer ‘€15m + bonuses’ for the 22-year-old, but it’s still unknown if that will be enough.
In fact, the newspaper explain that Suárez is ‘awaiting the meeting with Waford to know his asking price’.
Since his current deal only runs until 2022, there’s only so much the Premier League side can realistically ask for, but whether it’s low enough to meet Lazio’s budget remains to be seen.
