The Maxi Gomez to West Ham story is getting rather tedious, mostly because no one really seems to know what’s going on.

Sky Sports News’ claims that Celta Vigo had accepted offers from Valencia and the Hammers for the forward were strongly rebuked by everyone in Spain, including the La Liga club’s president, as no one has come close to the €50m release clause.

Behind the scenes, however, Gomez was said to have reached an agreement on personal terms with Marcelino’s side, and now it’s West Ham’s turn, according to Fichajes.com.

The Spanish website, who work alongside their French counterparts Foot Mercato, claim the Hammers and the Uruguay international have finally found a middle ground on a contract that suits all parties.

However, there remains the big issue of convincing Celta to sell, which would require a fee matching the release clause, or coming very close to doing so.

At this point, it wouldn’t be surprising if the 22-year-old was just agreeing terms with both clubs and seeing who pays for his services.

If he doesn’t get Champions League football with Valencia and West Ham trigger his clause, at least he’ll be able to wipe his tears with the extra money the Premier League side will undoubtedly be offering him.
