Bastian Schweinsteiger remains persona non grata at Manchester United, but now the transfer window has shut there’s not a lot anyone can do about an exit.

Keen to stay at Manchester United and fight for minutes on the pitch, Schweinsteiger made it very clear he has no wish to play for any other club in Europe. The midfielder left Bayern Munich in the summer of 2015, and it was the lure of Manchester United which made that exit possible.

Getting no football under Mourinho, Schweinsteiger will now be without it at international level too, having retired from the German national team. Philipp Lahm knows the player well, both from the national team, and from their many years together at Bayern Munich.

Speaking to SportBild, Lahm was asked about his former teammate’s situation at Manchester United, and replied: “For Basti it’s a difficult situation. But he is so experienced that he will make the right decision. I have no idea of what has happened at Manchester United. But I can say I definitely had wished for better for Basti.”
