While nothing concrete has emerged, there have been whispers about Dijon midfielder Mehdi Abeid potentially returning to Newcastle United this summer, having left the club in the 2015 to move to Panathinaikos in Greece for just over £500k.

Coming off a good season with Dijon last year, helping the Ligue 1 minnows avoid relegation, it’s no surprise a few clubs would be interested, and the player has given a long interview to Onze Mondial about his career.

Explaining he completely understood why his first stint with the Geordies didn’t work out, Abeid made it clear he held no grudge whatsoever towards Newcastle, and would even be open to a possible return if the opportunity presented itself.

He said: “Newcastle is the club of my heart. It meant a lot to me, so why not one day? I haven’t had any contact for now. Maybe they are following me, and that would be an honour because they are a great club. I’m not closing the door.”

Since leaving, Abeid has already touched upon the idea of a return to the north of England, telling L’Equipe something very similar back towards the end of May.

It’s all up to Rafael Benitez now.

The 24-year-old made 28 league appearances for Dijon last year, scoring three goals and picking up two assists.
