Things may all be rosy at Newcastle United right now, with Rafael Benitez leading them to the top of the Championship, and Dwight Gayle firing the goals in, but there’s been fierier times at St James’ Park.
Remember Emre Belozoglu? The former Newcastle United midfielder is now 36 years old is still going strong with his current side Medipol Başakşehir. The Turkish club are challenging for the Super League title under his captaincy, and Emre is producing some excellent midfield displays this season.
An iconic figure of Turkish football Emre is considered by many as the best Turkish footballer of all time ahead of the likes of Arda Turan and Hakan Sukur, and he spoke to FourFourTwo Turkey about his time in football and his time under former Newcastle United boss Sam Allardyce.
”To be honest I was not shocked when I heard about news involving Sam Allardyce. I’ve worked with lots of managers during my career but Sam Allardyce was the worst of all. I thought it was a joke when he was appointed as a manager of England. His relationships, his antics, his chewing gum style… He’s disgusting,” said Emre on his former Newcastle United manager.
Emre spent three seasons at Newcastle United after he signed for the club in 2005 from Inter Milan. The Turkish midfielder went on to make 64 appearances for the St James Park club before returning to his home country when he joined Fenerbahçe 2008. Emre will be best remember by the Newcastle United fans for his free kick in their 3-2 win over bitter rivals Sunderland.
We’re sure the Turkish legend would prefer Rafael Benitez, the current Newcastle United manager.
