Many who watched Federico Macheda’s late winner against Aston Villa in 2009 must have thought it was a bright start for the Manchester United youngster’s career. Even if it didn’t mean a bright Old Trafford future, it certainly provided a good basis to build a top l;vel career on.

The striker had loan spells at Sampdoria, Queens Park Rangers, Stuttgart, Doncaster and Birmingham before he was released by Manchester United in 2014. Then he signed for Cardiff City, and after a loan at Nottingham Forest, Macheda was also let go by the Welsh club.

He still hasn’t found a club to play for this season, although the Italian media are keeping an eye on every interested side. The most recent report is from Radio Kiss Kiss (via Calcio Mercato), who says that Napoli have approached his entourage.

Macheda would be a short term replacement for Arkadiusz Milik, who after a fantastic start of season, suffered a knee injury which will leave him out for a while.

As a free agent, Macheda can sign for a club even though the transfer window is closed.
