Sometimes, people in the world of football say things, and you wonder what went through their head and if they were really serious.
Eric Gerets, who was in charge of Marseille between 2007-09 for 98 games, has been added to that list when discussing potential recruits for his former side in an interview with Le Phocéen.
Asked if he could recommend a couple of Belgian recruits for Frank McCourt, the Ligue 1 side’s owner, he went all out, including a Tottenham star.
He said: “I’d say Dries Mertens, Napoli’s forward, who has a lot of potential (he’s 30). I also love Mousa Dembélé, the Spurs midfielder who’s in great form. They would be great recruits for Marseille”.
This is the same Mousa Dembélé who was recently compared to some of the greats, like Diego Maradona and Ronaldinho, by his manager, Mauricio Pochettino.
That, to us, sounds like a man who isn’t prepared to sell one of his stars, and even if he did, there’s absolutely no chance a team like Marseille would be able to afford him.
If he’d mention the other Moussa Dembélé, the one at Celtic, maybe we would have taken him seriously.
