Former Leeds United forward Noel Whelan believes summer signing Pablo Hernandez is making a huge impact in Garry’s Monk’s latest formation. The Spaniard joined the Championship side in the summer transfer window.

Writing in his column for the YEP, Whelan said since Monk changed the formation of the team Hernandez has benefited from it. Whelan revealed he watched Hernandez closely during the game with Barnsley last weekend, and Leeds United players were constantly giving the ball to the former Valencia star.

The former Leeds United star went on to say he thinks the players have been instructed by manager Garry Monk to supply the winger in order build attacks.

“In the current system, the 4-2-3-1 set-up, Pablo Hernandez is starting to really influence things. I watched the team closely against Barnsley and I noticed that every time a player had the ball at their feet, they got their head up and looked to find Hernandez straight away.

“All the time they were trying to feed him and it wouldn’t surprise me if one part of Monk’s instructions is to get possession to Hernandez whenever possible and then come alive off him,” said Whelan

Leeds United 2-1 win over Barnsley last Saturday helped Monk’s team climb to 11th in the table after a poor start to the season.  The victory over their Yorkshire rivals was their 4th win in 5 league games, and they had Hernandez to thank after he scored the winner.
