Former Leeds United forward Andy Ritchie feels the Championship club are going in the right direction signing players like Pontus Jansson.

Since Massimo Cellino bought the club he has recruited largely in Italy, and Ritchie believes Italians aren’t always suited to English football.

Writing in his weekend column for the YEP, Ritchie said Italian players can bring quality to the team, but they don’t always settle well in England.

He thinks they take time to adjust to the culture and the style of football, so believes players coming from the Scandinavian countries are more suited.

“Leeds have obviously brought in a lot of Italian players before and I am not knocking them here. But there can be a temperament issue and it can take some adapting for them to learn to play in English football. The Scandinavian players are more suited to that, for me,” said the former Leeds United star.

Cellino bought Leeds United in 2014 and under sporting director Nicola Salerno the club brought in a number of Serie A and Serie B players in the first two transfer windows, the majority of whim were Italian. However, only Jansson arrived this summer from Italy, but he’s a Swedish international.
