Former Netherlands international Youri Mulder has told the Dutch media he expects Ajax wonderkid Kasper Dolberg to eventually end up at a major club. The youngster grabbed the headlines at the weekend after scoring a hat trick during Ajax’s 5-0 victory over NEC.
Speaking to NOS, Mulder said Dolberg must continue to show the high-level performances he demonstrated on Sunday, but he believes the 19-year-old is aware of this. The 47-year-old said if the young talent continues to progress like this the big clubs in Europe will start to show an interest, and therefore he expects clubs like Chelsea would want to sign him.
“I rate him but he must understand that he must continue to play at a high level in a first team. I think clubs like Chelsea, Real Madrid and Barcelona are looking at him,” said Mulder on the Denmark international.
Dolberg made his debut for Ajax earlier this year, and has since gone on to make 12 league appearances, scoring 8 goals. The Dane has also made his debut for his country last week when he came on as a substitute during the 4-1 over Kazakhstan.
It’s hard to overestimate just how much hype is around Dolberg right now in Denmark, even before his hat trick. Sport Witness snapped the below newspaper clippings a few weeks ago when Dolberg was first called up the Danish squad.
Whilst Chelsea interest would be understandable, it would only make sense for Dolberg if the club saw him as one for Antonio Conte’s first team squad, rather than a bet for the future.
Dolberg needs games to progress and is getting that now at Ajax, and it would be a shame to see him move to Chelsea, or anywhere else, too soon and stunt his rise.
