Currently playing for Kairat Almaty in Kazakhstan, former Arsenal forward Andrei Arshavin is enjoying the twilight years of his career at a club where he is still able to have an impact on the pitch.

The 35-year-old, who moved there in March from Kuban Krasnodar, has enjoyed a successful season with Almaty, scoring 10 goals and assisting 10 times in 32 appearances.

Convinced by Alexandr Borodyuk, Guus Hiddink’s former assistant, to sign for the Kazakhstani club, Arshavin has also recently signed a contract extension, keeping him there until December 2017, and spoke to UEFA.com about it.

The forward also recalled his move to Arsenal, a club he played for under Arsène Wenger, and explained he would have signed for the Gunners ‘regardless of the manager’, which wasn’t the case for Kairat Almaty, with Borodyuk playing a big part in his decision.

The fact the Frenchman happened to still be in charge was just how things worked out, with Wenger still happily at the helm, four years after Arshavin’s return to Zenit St Petersburg.

The player was also asked who he thought would win the Premier League, a league he played 105 games in, scoring 23 goals and picking up 27 assists.

He said: “I think that Manchester City and Arsenal are the teams who will compete for the title in England, even if Chelsea are leader at the moment.”

The former Russia international is clearly still a Gunner at heart, it seems.
