After the end of the last season, Arsene Wenger stepped down as Arsenal manager after managing the club for over two decades.

Unai Emery was appointed as the Frenchman’s successor and in his first four matches, the Gunners have lost twice in the league. Alexandre Lacazette’s powerful strike against Cardiff City helped the north London club avoid dropping points in Wales on Sunday.

They have failed to keep a clean sheet in any of the fixtures this campaign, and have conceded eight goals so far this season, despite three of their five signings –  Sokratis Papastathopoulos, Stephan Lichtsteiner and Bernd Leno (goalkeeper) – planned to strengthen at the back.

Former Arsenal player Emmanuel Petit has slammed Arsenal for failing to fix their defence and believes the current crop of defensive players at the Emirates Stadium are currently not good enough to finish near the top this season.

“Even with Aubameyang and Lacazette, Arsenal will not be on the podium if the defensive problems are not settled,” Petit told RMC Sport.

“They have a defence that is still far from the level to compete [to finish in] the top four. We have seen it again in this game [against Cardiff]. It  is a recurring problem that dates back to decades at Arsenal and has never has been rectified, neither by Unai Emery, nor by Arsene Wenger, nor by the players in the field.”
