The KNVB have released a statement to inform Red Bull they will be unable to take control of a Dutch club.

It’s been well documented the drinks company could be looking to expand even more into football, and have already made an attempt to purchase Leeds United.

Red Bull already own RB Leipzig in Germany and RB Salzburg, but there has been speculation they could look to the Netherlands for their next project. However, the Dutch FA have ruled this out due to the fact they already control two UEFA affiliated clubs.

Voetbal Primeur have reported on the statement released by the KNVB, which confirmed is not possible for Red Bull to take purchase or even buy shares in a Dutch club because of their ownership of Leipzig and Salzburg.

“The Dutch rules are clear: it is not possible for a party like Red Bull to be a shareholder in a Dutch professional football at the time that Red Bull is also connected directly or indirectly as a shareholder, director and or commissioner to another professional football club that is a member of an association affiliated to UEFA,” said the KNVB.

Last year we covered comments Leeds United co-owner Massimo Cellino made to the Italian media when asked about the rumours Red Bull wanted to buy the club. The Leeds United chief confirmed he received an offer from the Austrian company, but this was declined.

“I had an offer from Red Bull, but I do not want to sell, for now. In England football clubs can earn from the stadium, merchandising, TV rights, and the fluid market allows you to sell and buy,” said the Leeds United owner.

Following the approach from Red Bull Cellino has since sold 50% of his stake in Leeds United to Italian businessman Andrea Radrizzani. There has also been recent speculation Cellino could sell his remaining shares to Radrizzani in the summer as he plots a return to Italian football.
