First to arrive at training and the last to leave. It’s a compliment often handed out to players who are doing well, or coming to the end of an illustrious career. An explanation that talent alone isn’t enough to succeed at the highest level, and a message to others that hard work brings results.
It happened recently with Frank Lampard, with such comments sent the Chelsea legend’s way after he announced his retirement. One may wonder why, given it’s often said about the great players, all footballers don’t try and stay longer in training.
Southampton players right now will be getting such inspiration from Manolo Gabbiadini, according to one of his former coaches. Delio Rossi worked with Gabbiadini at Sampdoria and given the impression the forward has already made at Southampton, he’s been asked for comment.
Speaking to Calciomercato, Delio Rossi was asked to pinpoint a special feature of Gabbiadini: “The way he trains. He’s great, the first to arrive and last to leave. He is hungry, wants it, has always wanted to become a great. I had no doubts about his professionalism because he comes from the youth system at Atalanta that I know well.”
The 25 year old’s desire has led him from being a used, but not ultra important, member of Napoli’s squad, to pushing for a move to Southampton. The player’s ambition to show what he can do, and work to get to the best level, is already paying off in English football.
Gabbiadini is likely to take some inspiration from his sister Melania, the 33 year old is one of Italy’s greatest female footballers.
