Javier Manquillo has found himself in a strange, unexplained limbo at new club Celta Vigo after leaving Newcastle United a year ago.

AS Andalucia cover the player today and how a year after leaving Newcastle, things are not exactly going to plan.

The defender joined Celta Vigo on a free January in the January transfer window in 2024 bringing an end to a seven-year stay at St James Park in which he managed 110 appearances in total.

The plan had been to get his career back on track after an injury hit few years but so far, he’s only managed 23 appearances in total for Celta Vigo and at the minute ‘finds himself in limbo’ at the club.

AS explain that for the fourth consecutive match, Manquillo was not among the 23 called up by manager Claudio Giráldez, missing a match against the club of his youth, Atletico Madrid.

The reason for his ‘fall into ostracism’ isn’t being made clear, though, with Giraldez insisting it is a technical decision and nothing more. The former Newcastle man had started the season as a starter but now finds himself in limbo.

Initially his absence had seemed to be linked to the January transfer window but with that closed, the mystery has only deepened.

His last appearance is now close to a month ago, on January 19th against Athletic in Vigo and all signs are that the former Newcastle man, whose contract expires in the summer, is unwanted and will be on the move again.
