Lucas Torreira left Sampdoria and made a switch to Arsenal before the start of the season.

After taking a month time to adapt to the Premier League, the 23-year-old has been a regular figure in the Gunners midfield and has made 29 appearances in the league which includes 20 starts.

Prior to his move to the north London club, Napoli were also keen on acquiring his services.

The Uruguay international’s father Ricardo Torreira was a guest on Radio Marte’s “Si gonfia la rete” and he revealed that his son was ‘close’ to joining Carlo Ancelotti’s side last summer.

Ricardo doesn’t going into details for the reason why the transfer to the Naples didn’t take shape. He said, “Lucas was close to Napoli? Yes, he was.”

“There was a negotiation with Napoli, but something very strange has happened and it is known, in the transfer market things can change from one moment to another.

“Nothing in particular, the negotiations are long and complicated and it can also happen that the negotiation ends differently than it was set.

“There was an opportunity to move to England and Lucas took advantage of it and I must say that he is very good at Arsenal.”

Torreira Sr has opened the door for Lucas to return to Italy in the future, while he did not exclude the possibility of the midfielder joining Napoli.

“Lucas is linked to Italian football where he grew up and maybe will return in the future. In life never say never so it is possible that he will return to this wonderful country and why not, to Naploli or to some other club that will ask for him…,” Ricardo added.
