After being rejected by Marco Silva, Everton have been offered the services of his compatriot Rui Vitória, according to a report from The Mirror today.
Now instead of signing a manager with Premier League experience, the Toffees would be considering bringing in the Portuguese boss.
But what’s the word in Portugal about this story?
Well, it’s safe to say that they were caught by surprise with the report. Now all the major outlets are covering the story from the Mirror, with a few comments to add.
The biggest reaction is coming from Benfica fans, who are surprisingly wishing Vitória a good riddance. Most of them are on A Bola‘s page.
But the manager has been getting quite unfair treatment as well. In 2017 alone, Benfica sold the likes of Gonçalo Guedes, Ederson, Nelson Semedo, Victor Lindelof and Konstantinos Mitroglou. And spent less than €10m with signings in the summer.
So after having his team torn apart, Vitória is now getting pressure to do well with the leftovers from the past season, something quite unbelievable for a club like Benfica.
Now there’s no doubt Portuguese managers fancy a shot in the Premier League, especially because they have been doing pretty well in England recently.
This weekend, you could find articles in the Portuguese press explaining that three of their managers won their games: Nuno Espírito Santo at Wolverhampton, José Mourinho at Manchester United and Marco Silva at Watford. Only Carlos Carvalhal got a draw at Sheffield Wednesday.
So this recent success seems to be exciting both parties, and in case the reports are to be believed, there’s a reasonable possibility Rui Vitória would fancy the change.
