After spending three seasons with West Ham United, Frederic Kanoute left the Hammers and joined Tottenham Hotspur in 2003.
The former striker spent two years at the north London club before making a switch to Sevilla, with whom he spent seven seasons. The 41-year-old sat down for an interview with Catalan newspaper Sport and most of the questions were related to his last club in England.
He claims that his spell with the Premier League club was not a failure, while he also made it clear Tottenham are a completely different level of side than when he was at the club.
The former Lyon man was impressed with the attacking style of play they have deployed since Mauricio Pochettino’s arrival in 2014, but also explained why their fans do not have faith in the squad to win the title.
“Some say it was not a good stage in my sports career, but I do not agree. The problem was that I did not score as many goals as I did at Sevilla. It was in England, where I started playing centre forward,” Kanoute explained.
Asked about Tottenham’s transformation, he said: “The change does not surprise me. It is a historic club with the potential to be a big club again.
“I don’t know if they want to win the Premier League, I honestly believe that their fans don’t trust them [to win the title] very much because they are a team that usually starts well and ends the season badly, it is difficult to maintain the pace until the end of the season.
“The club has grown a lot and plays attractive football, but you need to translate it into titles, to earn something.”
After finishing fifth in his debut season, Pochettino has helped Spurs finish in the top three for the past three seasons.
This term, they are fourth in the table with 15 points after seven matches, four points behind leaders Manchester City.
