Over the past week, Tottenham have been strangely linked with Mauro Icardi. At the weekend we went to great lengths to explain why Spurs, even if they needed such a player, may not quite welcome the Icardi circus.
Icardi’s wife Wanda Nara is acting as the player’s agent, and she took to Twitter to suggest he was set to Inter Milan, later speaking to the media and confirming that was the case, because the club couldn’t afford him.
Immediately everyone saw through it, and Inter Milan dismissed the claims as nonsense. Nara then again spoke to the Italian media, and said that Icardi had been promised more money when Inter improved their finances, and he deserved much higher wages etc etc etc
There was a backlash, predictably, and Nara made her Twitter account, which has 2.5m followers, private for a while, before returning and posting pictures of the couple’s baby.
Icardi and Nara grace the front page of Gazzetta dello Sport on Tuesday, with the gist being that she’s trying to play and pressure Inter. The Italian club are getting frustrated and could sell their captain, just to get rid of the hassle.
On that note, Calciomercato asked fans if Icardi should be stripped of the captaincy. The striker got the armband when he renewed last summer, with it very much looking like part of the deal.
So far more than 80% of those who have voted reckon he should be stripped of the captaincy, everyone in Italy is growing tired of his antics.
And this is just one reason why Tottenham should likely steer clear. Icardi would be more suited to a club that likes a bit of drama.
