It was almost fitting, and probably by design rather than accident, but Carles Gil was excellent for Deportivo La Coruna as they beat Las Palmas 3-0 on Saturday.
In one of his best performances since signing from Aston Villa on loan, Gil scored the final goal, just before half time. Depor took Las Palmas to pieces in the first half, and then sat back on their spoils in the second.
Gil hadn’t scored for Depor before that, it had been something missing from the player’s game in Spain. The move from Aston Villa hasn’t been perfectly smooth, with ups and downs with fitness and form, but recently Gil’s prominence has increased.
That first goal will also be Gil’s last for Depor, unless Aston Villa can help them out with a value transfer. The 24 year old is contracted to return to Villa, and unless an agreement is found, with Depor or anyone else, Gil will be part of Steve Bruce’s squad next season.
Having repeatedly spoken about his will to remain, Gil will hope an agreement is found, but it’s by no means a certainty. The Spanish club would only be willing to pay a token transfer fee, and would much prefer another loan rather than paying any fee at all.
Deportivo La Coruna’s local media isn’t exactly brimming with confidence over a deal, and fans who have grown to appreciate Gil aren’t putting huge pressure on, aware of the financial realities at their club.
Gil and Depor will hope something gets sorted out, but that’s very much down to Aston Villa.
