Feyenoord coach Arne Slot can aim higher than Leeds United in the summer, should he decide to leave the Dutch side at that point.
That’s according to fellow manager Mario Been, who says Slot is as good as Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag and should be thinking that high in terms of a new club.
Slot was heavily linked with Leeds throughout their search for Jesse Marsch’s replacement, with numerous reports stating that he was on their main shortlist of options for the American’s successor.
They were particularly keen on the Dutchman after failing to get Andoni Iraola with it explained at one point that Feyenoord could have pocketed almost €4m for the move.
Slot also would have earned a nice pay packet if he’d joined Leeds, with them willing to pay him €4.5m in salary.
He ultimately turned down the approach, preferring to see where his work with Feyenoord this season takes him with his side 1st in the Eredivisie and three points clear of Ajax after 25 games of the campaign.
That choice was a smart one, according to Been, who believes Slot can look higher than Leeds should he decide to move on.
“I think one thing will be very decisive: achieving Champions League football,” he told the Voormekaar Podcast, relayed by Voetbal Primeur.
“If Feyenoord is able to become champion and therefore participate in the ball of millions, then Arne will stay for another year.
“Then there is so much financially possible that he can really strengthen the team. If it doesn’t happen, his performances abroad will not go unnoticed. I think he can take it a step further. He can be a little pickier.
“I attribute him the same level as Erik ten Hag. So, I think he should have a higher reach than Leeds.”
