Facundo Pellistri has revealed he decided to leave Manchester United this summer before the start of pre-season.
The forward has been speaking to 100% Deporte on Radio Sport 890, relayed by ESPN Deportes, about his decision to move on from Manchester United this summer.
The 22-year-old has joined Panathinaikos in Greece, moving to them in a €6m deal on the 21st of August.
That brought an end to a four-year stay at Manchester United, who he joined from Peñarol for €8.65m in October 2020.
He spent most of his time at Old Trafford out on loan, playing twice for Alavés and then Granada in the second half of last season.
He only managed 25 appearances in total for Manchester United, with successive managers preferring other options to him and the emergence of players such as Alejandro Garnacho and now Amad Diallo continuing to push him down the pecking order.
It is presumably because of that he decided to move on to Panathinaikos this summer, and he admits that the decision to move on was made before he had even returned to pre-season training.
“I had made the decision a little before I returned to training,” he said.
“I knew that the ideal thing for my future and at my age was to play, and that I could play in Manchester, but it would be more complicated.
“So, I wasn’t going to have the amount of minutes that I want in a year, so we went out to look for different alternatives.
“All the options I considered were from Europe. I didn’t receive any proposal from South America, it wasn’t that I ruled out that option of returning to South American football.”
