As Jhon Arias waits to join Wolverhampton Wanderers, several Colombian football voices have weighed in on whether the Fluminense star is truly ready for the demands of English football.
In a feature published by El Tiempo in Colombia, a group of coaches and former professionals assessed Arias’ potential in the Premier League, with particular focus on his tactical profile, versatility, and mental readiness for the transition.
Coach Hernán Torres praised the winger’s development under Fernando Diniz at Fluminense, especially his intelligence and positional flexibility. “He learned to operate across the field, from his natural right wing to more central roles. This kind of versatility is highly valued in English teams that switch systems throughout the season,” said Torres, adding that Arias has “the reading of the game to thrive in a high-paced environment where space is limited”.
Jorge Luis Pinto, who managed Colombia and Honduras, echoed that sentiment but emphasised Arias’ technical finesse over raw pace. “He’s not just about explosiveness. His changes of rhythm, short dribbles and sudden turns make him unpredictable. That suits teams looking for depth with intelligence, not just speed,” Pinto explained.
The Fluminense winger, 26, played a key role in the club’s 2023 Copa Libertadores triumph and has been one of the most consistent attacking players in Brazilian football over the past two seasons. His combination of goals, assists and tactical awareness has made him one of the standout Colombian exports in recent years.
Still, former Middlesbrough striker Hamilton Ricard offered a note of caution for a new life at Wolves.
“The Premier League is physically brutal. He’ll need to improve his resilience in one-on-one duels and learn to absorb contact,” said the former forward. Ricard also warned of the “cultural and media pressure” in England, stressing the importance of a supportive club environment to aid Arias’ off-field adaptation.
While expectations around the winger are high, the experts agree: the Premier League will test him in new ways – but his technical and mental foundation could make the difference.
Arias has reportedly agreed personal terms with Wolves, and the deal now depends on the final agreement with Fluminense.
