When Chelsea agreed to let Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang go to Marseille for free, they were primarily concerned about getting him off their wage bill.

As for the Ligue 1 side, they were hoping they could help rekindle the Gabon international’s stagnating career, which had taken a quick downturn following his transfer to Stamford Bridge from Barcelona.

So far, though, nothing really impressive has come of it, and the Chelsea flop has continued his struggles in the south of France, as explained by Rio Mavuba on Téléfoot, relayed by Football Club de Marseille.

Talking about the striker, the pundit explained that while the player’s bad form is not entirely down to him, his status has been attracting him more criticism.

He said: “He’s coming off a complicated season at Chelsea, even in terms of statistics. And today, he is slower in terms of his speed and depends more on the collective. The collective at Marseille is not well-oiled enough to be able to express itself. It’s hard to focus everything on him, but he’s the star, he’s Aubameyang. So we expect more from him.”

Since joining Marseille, the player has scored five goals and assisted another three in 15 games in all competitions for the Ligue 1 side, but only one of those five goals have come in the league.

This comes after a mere three goals in 21 games for Chelsea, which was a big drop from his 13 goals in 24 games for Barcelona, which is what led the Blues to spend €12m on him in the first place.
