Earlier on Thursday, a surprising claim emerged from Portugal that Manchester United’s Erik ten Hag was set to have a meeting with Jorge Mendes in Portugal.

The subject of this meeting was the reported hijack of Liverpool’s deal for Darwin Nuñez, with multiple claims suggesting a deal taking the Uruguayan to Anfield is close.

The Reds are said to be nearing a €100m or so deal to bring the prolific goalscorer to England, who was also a reported target for Manchester United.

With multiple exits throughout his squad this summer, Ten Hag will want a new striker, and Nuñez was reportedly one of the men on his wishlist.

However, a source told Sport Witness “it’s not true” when asked about the reported meeting between the Manchester United manager and Mendes.

As for the deal taking Nuñez to Liverpool, ‘negotiations are well on the way’, although they haven’t been closed as of yet.

This will be great news for Liverpool fans, who might have been sweating a little bit.

Manchester United, down their end, might very well be interested in Nuñez and could still make a move for him if there is time left, but they aren’t meeting Mendes in Portugal.
