Despite a multitude of stories over the past few days of a return to Italy, Birkir Bjarnason will be an Aston Villa player for the upcoming Championship season.

The Iceland international was key to the Vlllains’ 3-2 win over Wigan at the weekend, scoring the last minute winner, and the club have no interest in letting him leave this summer.

Empoli in Serie A have been extremely interested in helping the 30-year-old return to Italy, where he has previously played for Sampdoria and Pescara, but a source close to the player told Sport Witness on Wednesday the midfielder ‘will stay’ at Villa Park.

That doesn’t mean the Italians are ready to give up, however, as Corriere dello Sport believe the Italian side’s directors are going to try and make a late push for his services, especially if they lose Rade Krunic in the coming days.

But, unless something drastic happens in the next few days, as Serie A’s transfer window shuts on Friday at 8pm local time, Bjarnason will be helping Steve Bruce and co. pushing for Premier League promotion this season.
