It seems the silly season is right upon us now a lot of countries have been knocked out of the Euros, and links between clubs and players you wouldn’t normally associate together are starting to emerge.
One of these came from Sport in Spain, who reported on Wednesday in their paper edition that Atlético Madrid had made a decision on a new striker, who happened to be Liverpool’s Christian Benteke.
The Spanish newspaper stated that after considering Diego Costa, Tony Sanabria and Edinson Cavani, Diego Simeone had made the decision to go for the Belgian striker instead.
Sport claimed negotiations were already underway and that a deal could be reached before the end of the Euros.
Well, that’s not what we’ve been told.
Speaking to Sport Witness, the player’s agent, Kismet Eris, stated there was currently “nothing at all with any team” at this moment in time, and when asked if we could expect Christian Benteke to stay at Liverpool for the 2016-17 season, his answer was a simple “yes”.
Of course, things could change at any moment, with a club throwing themselves at Liverpool and the player with offers neither can refuse, but as of Wednesday, the Belgium international is planning on staying with Jürgen Klopp next year.
