Former Tottenham Hotspur manager Martin Jol has stepped down as the coach of Egyptian side Al Ahly after concerns over his safety. The Dutchman has only been the coach of Al Ahly for six months.
The BBC have reported Jol is no longer the manager of Al Ahly following claims he received death threats from his own fans. Last week Jol was seen arguing with Al Ahly supporters after their 2-2 with Zambia’s Zesco United. Jol has since received threats on social media due to his actions.
A spokesperson for Al Ahly released a statement saying Jol will not be seeing out his contract because of personal reasons, and has now left the club by mutual agreement.
“Jol has told us he will not be able to complete his contract for personal reasons. We have accepted that and ended the contract with him.”
Jol spent four seasons with Tottenham after he arrived at the club from after arriving from Holland in 2004. Since leaving White Hart Lane Jol has managed Hamburg, Ajax and Fulham.
The Dutchman has always been a much liked character, even when not having a successful patch, so it’s especially concerning to hear the reports from Egypt.
