Former Liverpool goalkeeper Brad Jones has revealed it was “emotions” that caused Liverpool to lose the title in 2014.
The Reds infamously missed out on the title under Brendan Rodgers six years ago, courtesy of the now infamous slip from Steven Gerrard against Chelsea.
Liverpool had looked like running away with the title and were on course to secure their first Premier League crown with three games left to go and José Mourinho’s side coming to Anfield.
An enormous groundswell of emotion had built around Rodgers side during the season, something he and his team had tapped into to significant effect to aide their cause.
Emotion turned on them in the meeting with Chelsea, though, as expectation and excitement turned into tension and worry.
That ultimately played it’s part as Gerrard’s slip gave Chelsea an undeserved lead, and the pressure told on Liverpool, who were unable to recover from going behind.
Many have blamed the emotions of that afternoon on the defeat and Jones, who was Liverpool’s substitute keeper that day, believes that theory.
“I learned a lot from that time,” he told Soccer News.
“Especially that as a footballer, you should always be balanced in terms of mentality, not get too tense.
“That was the problem at the time at Liverpool; the emotions started to play too big a role.”
