Henry Onyekuru may be better saying nothing for the rest of the season, or least until after the winter market has closed, and simply let his football do the talking.

Earlier this month, the Everton owned player, on loan for the season at Anderlecht, was quoted by Belgium’s DH as saying: “I hope to be able to play there in January. Everton is happy with my start to the season. But we are not in January and all my concentration is in Anderlecht.”

Then, around a week ago, Onyekuru’s agent ruled that out“It’s not possible to return to Everton in winter, unfortunately. There is no clause in the contract that they can retrieve him early. In addition, he is not eligible for a work permit. The intention is that he will return to Everton this summer.”

Now, after another round of speaking to the media, Onyekuru is quoted by DH as saying: “I don’t know if I’ll stay until the end of the season. I cannot promise anything. I’m not saying I’m leaving, but we’ll see.”

HLN have the quotes slightly different:  “Everything happens for a reason. I don’t have my work permit to play in England, but it’s going the right direction. Anderlecht was the right choice for me now. What happens during the market, we’ll see that again. I have never said that I want to leave Anderlecht in the winter. Maybe there are clubs interested in me but I focus on Anderlecht. I know: everything is possible in football and I’m owned by Everton, but I’m not saying I’m staying or leaving.”

Aside from contradicting himself, Onyekuru seems torn between screaming out ‘I’D LOVE TO MOVE TO THE PREMIER LEAGUE IN JANUARY BUT I PROBABLY CAN’T’ and trying to say the right things to please Anderlecht, because there’s a good chance he’s spending the rest of this season at the Belgium club.

The last thing Onyekuru wants to do is annoy Anderlecht to the point they stop counting on him so much, if they have a choice, and stifle his own progression.

That’s why it may be best to button it.
