After four and a half years at Tottenham, Jonathan De Bie decided it was time to try something new and search for first-team football.
He’s found that at RWD Molenbeek, who play in Belgium’s second division, where he arrived on February 1st on a free transfer.
Signing on the dotted line until 2023, the player feels it was the right time to really start his career as a goalkeeper, feeling this particular project was ‘the best for him’.
Despite having the chance to go in the Jupiler Pro League, the now former Tottenham player felt fighting for promotion in the next two to three years while getting first team football was better than sitting on a bench elsewhere.
While ‘everything was going well’ at Spurs, Covid complicated things for him, and since he was the youngest of five goalkeepers in the club’s U23s, he ended up missing out more often than not.
He said, speaking to L’Avenir: “It was like Disneyland. I arrived over there as a 16-year-old. I was around amazing people, great infrastructures, great professionalism. Everything is in place for our future. I’ve only got positives. To be able to train at one of the biggest teams in the world, with great players”.
As for said footballers: “They’re all exemplary, they help and advise the youngsters a lot. They’ve gone through this too, so the relationship was really healthy. It was great to train with Hugo Lloris, because he encouraged me a lot!”
He’ll be taking all of this to his new side, and who knows? Maybe he’ll return to the Premier League one day.
